It’s Time To Organize Your Utensil Drawer
It’s time to organize your utensil drawer. Like really organize it.
Show of hands: how many of you have popped your forks into a plastic tray and called it a day?
What if I told you that your utensil drawer can be so. much. better?
And it doesn’t have to cost a fortune.
This utensil drawer above? It was organized for all of $30.
Let me share how I got it here.
Decluttering Your Utensils: What Stays, What Goes
The simplest – and cheapest – way to organizing your utensil drawer is by getting rid of what you don’t need.
It’s time to get rid of:
- Lone wolfs. That fork from college that you’re still holding on to? It’s time to say your farewells.
- Stained and mis-shaped pieces. That fork with the bent prong that stabs you each time you eat? Yeah, it’s time for that to go, too.
- Mismatched sets. Pick your fave set and toss the rest. Don’t have a set? Treat yourself to a new one. It doesn’t matter if it’s from IKEA or William Sonoma, sticking to a single style will make your drawer sing.
While you’re at it, also be mindful of just how many utensils you keep.
Do you live alone? Chances are that you don’t need a dozen forks. Keep to only what you need.
Family of 5? Pick enough to get you through however often you run your dishwasher. For context, we keep 10 of each utensil (big fork, little fork, etc.) for a family of 4.
The Right Organizing Product For Your Drawer
Once you know how many utensils that you’re keeping, it’s time to find the right organizing product for your drawer.
Resist all urge to spring for the plastic Dollar Store version. Please.
There are so many better options out there that won’t break the bank.
Personally, I’m a fan of bamboo when it comes to utensil drawers. Here’s why:
- It’s more environmentally sustainable vs. plastics and acrylics
- It lasts forever (part of that whole sustainability thing)
- Contrary to popular belief, it doesn’t cost a fortune. You can pick these up at Target for $20
- It just looks good
Pro tip: Splurge for the expandable utensil trays to use up as much as that drawer space as possible, and give room to some extra utensils like serving spoons.
If your utensil drawer is large enough, consider picking up additional bamboo drawer dividers or drawer bins to finish off the rest of the space. Use this to store cooking utensils, apple cutters, baking supplies, and the like.
An Organized Utensil Drawer Doesn’t Have To Be Complicated
Bottom line: utensil drawers can really be as simple as you want them. If that Dollar Store buy brings on the joy, I’m all for it.
If you want to elevate the look of your drawer a few notches, then picking up a few more products, de-cluttering the no-longer loved pieces, and giving each utensil a home will make your drawer far more functional and real pretty, too. Have fun with it!
