Summer’s Here: 4 Steps To An Organized Summer Closet
Now that Game of Thrones has officially ended (tear), it’s time to say farewell to the Starks and your warm winter clothing. Summer is here…or at least almost here, depending on where you live.
If you’re going to do one thing to treat your closet right this season, do this: pack away your winter gear. Here are just a few tips to getting your closet feeling refreshed and organized in no time.
4 Steps to Organizing Your Summer Closet
- Pick up a few matching baskets. Any basket will do, just make sure that it makes you happy when you look at it. And don’t just buy one basket. Buy 3, 4 or more matching baskets depending on how much clothes you have to pack away. The most common organizing mistake I see is someone buying a single of an organizational product. Always buy in multiples. This will make your space look like it was designed with intention and will appear far more balanced. Rest easy knowing that you can always return products if you go overboard (it happens).
- Comb your closet for all winter gear. I’m talking sweaters, boots, uber thick sweatpants and socks, flannel pj’s, scarves and other accessories. Yes, it may get cold one night. No, you don’t need all ten sweaters. Pick one and put the rest aside. (Bonus points if you toss items that you didn’t wear this past season or have seen better days).
- Pop your winter stuff into your new baskets. Bonus points if you categorize the clothing by basket and add labels. No judgement if these extra steps aren’t for you.
- Place the bins on your top closet shelf and enjoy the view of a less cluttered closet. If you don’t have an upper closet shelf, don’t sweat it. Find another spot in the closet, under a bed, in the garage, or attic. Just make sure to use an air-tight container if that’s the direction you go.
Favorite Baskets for Organizing Your Closet
Here are a few of my favorite products for keeping off-season clothes organized and tucked away. You can find all of these at The Container Store (photo cred: @thecontainerstore).
Water hyacinth baskets that breathe well while looking pretty:
Under bed storage for when you need these items tucked away and out of sight:
Weather-sealed storage for when you really want them tucked away in the garage or attic:
Your mind and body may not yet be in prime summer shape, but at least your closet can be. Moving your winter clothing to the side (or top shelf) will make finding all of those cute shorts, dresses and rompers far more pleasant.
With that, I’m off to find my next binge-worthy tv show.
